Immigration Justice in Counseling and the Multidimensional Ecosystemic Comparative Approach: A Reflection

Submitted by Jessi Gutheil & Jess Banik

In February, CCA held a speaker event hosted by CACES and invited Dr. Mariaimeé Gonzalez to speak on Immigration Justice in Counseling. Dr. Gonzalez highlighted immigration justice counseling as an important framework counselors can utilize to support immigrant, refugee, and undocumented communities. This approach recognizes mental health needs while also recognizing the significance of systemic, social, and legal barriers, moving beyond a focus on individual symptoms and experiencing. The immigration justice counseling approach focuses on social justice, advocacy, and cultural responsiveness. Dr. Gonzalez provided education on counselor considerations, legal contexts, evaluations, and ethical responsibilities regarding work with these groups. One of the concepts emphasized by Dr. Gonzalez was the Multidimensional Ecosystemic Comparative Approach (MECA), which she described as an empowering family therapy approach to work with diverse clients.
